Multimodal models: image, video, audio

An LLM only reads and writes text. A multimodal model extends the same core idea - predict the next chunk - to other formats: generating or understanding images, video, or audio, or combining several at once (describe this image, narrate this video). You already use two of these directly - ElevenLabs (text to voice) and Runway (text/image to video) are both multimodal generation tools, each specialized to one output type. Midjourney (images), OpenAI's Sora, and Google's Veo (both video) are the other names you'll hear most.

Layer 1How it actually works

Under the hood these aren't fundamentally different from LLMs - many use the same transformer architecture, just trained on tokenized pixels, audio waveforms, or video frames instead of (or alongside) text; newer "world models" go further, learning to predict how a whole scene evolves over time rather than generating one static image. General-purpose multimodal models (recent Claude, GPT, and Gemini versions) can take an image or audio clip as input and reason about it inside the same conversation as text; dedicated generation tools like Runway or ElevenLabs are usually narrower, tuned specifically for output quality in one modality rather than general reasoning.

Layer 2Try it / see it

Take a real Kasper or Provia asset - a photo, or a short script - and run it through two paths: describe it in words to a text-only model, versus feeding the actual image or audio directly to a multimodal model. Notice how much nuance your text description loses compared to the model reasoning over the real file.
